Huacachina’s charm lies in its unique blend of natural beauty and exhilarating experiences. As my wife and I arrived, the first sight of the shimmering oasis, framed by the golden dunes, took my breath away. It was like stepping into another world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Sandboarding: Shooting the Sand

A sandboard awaits its rider in the Huacachina sand dunes.

No trip to Huacachina is complete without trying sandboarding. Jennifer and I were a bit apprehensive at first, but the excitement quickly took over. There are essentially two kinds of sandboarding. The first is similar to snowboarding where you stand atop the board and glide down the shifting sand. The second is more akin to the luge where you fly facefirst down the sand and try not to tip sideways. One of the girls on our tour did tip sideways and while it looked bad as the sand exploded all around her and she rolled to a stop, she quickly popped up with no injury. The latter version is easier to pick up and is more common when exploring the Huacachina Oasis.

Dune Buggy Rides: An Adrenaline Rush

If sandboarding was exhilarating, the dune buggy rides were nothing short of an adrenaline overdose. Strapped into a powerful buggy, we sped up and down the massive dunes, our driver navigating the sandy waves with impressive skill. The sudden drops and sharp turns at times on nearly vertical mountains of sand made for a roller-coaster-like experience. At times the buggy full of tourists held our breath and clamped down on the bar in front of us so hard that all our knuckles went white, praying that the cart would stay upright and not roll over. The next moment we were all screaming in elation and begging for more.

Sunrise Over the Dunes: A Moment of Serenity

One of the most magical moments in Huacachina was witnessing the sunrise over the dunes. Rising early, I climbed to the top of the highest dune overlooking the oasis, the pre-dawn air crisp and cool. As the first rays of the sun peeked over the horizon, the dunes were bathed in a golden glow, casting long shadows and illuminating the oasis below. It was a moment of pure serenity after a very difficult climb and yet another reminder that some of the best experiences require rising early and sweating.

Oasis Wildlife: Unexpected Encounters

A heron enjoys the cool evening sitting next to the Huacachina Oasis in Peru. He sat perfectly still while I changed lenses and did several long photographic exposures.

While Huacachina is primarily known for its adventurous activities, it also offers opportunities for quieter, more reflective moments. Strolling around the lagoon, I was delighted to spot various birds, including herons, egrets, and lots of gallinula. It was early May and the baby gallinula squawked for their parents to feed them. I even found one baby gallinula attempting to make breakfast out of a dead fish that rivaled her in size. It is amazing to see life thriving in such an inhospitable environment because of this magical oasis.

Exploring Huacachina’s culinary scene is a treat for the senses. Local eateries offer a variety of dishes, from traditional Peruvian ceviche to hearty lomo saltado. One of our favorite spots is the Wild Olive Trattoria & Guest House which provides a delightful fusion of Peruvian and Italian cuisines. This can all be enjoyed from their patio deck on the Huacachina oasis promenade making for a memorable meal under the stars.

Rest and Relaxation: Hotel Recommendations

There is something so peaceful about the stillness of the early morning water in the Huacachina Oasis.

After a day of adventures, finding a comfortable place to rest is essential. We stayed at the Wild Olive and while the rooms left something to be desired the shower was hot and the bed was very comfortable. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. For those looking for a more luxurious experience, DM Hoteles Mossone offers elegant accommodations with stunning views of the dunes, providing a perfect blend of comfort and style.
